In 1777, the British Bath (BASS) Group was founded, becoming the first British group with an independent registered trademark. American entrepreneur Kemmons? Kemmons Wilson, an American entrepreneur, opened the first Holiday Inn in Memphis, Tennessee, USA in 1952 after he felt that the hotels he stayed in lacked a home away from home service and that they charged too much. The hotel had a swimming pool, air-conditioning and a restaurant, and offered basic amenities such as telephones, ice and free parking, while children were allowed to stay in their parents’ rooms free of charge. These amenities, now considered commonplace, revolutionized the hotel industry at the time and led to a set of hotel standards that were adopted by every Holiday Inn and led the way in the development of hotels around the world.

Mr. Wilson went on to pioneer the chain business. He took advantage of the nationwide expansion of the U.S. interstate highway system and opened hotels along the way, rapidly expanding the Holiday Inn network. The success of Holiday Inn in the U.S. quickly attracted the interest of investors in Europe and Asia, and it grew into the largest single hotel brand in the world. Today the Holiday Inn brand can be found all over the world.
